Luck vs Hard-Work

Before I actually start let me share an interesting anecdote, when I was in college, one of my classmates invariably said that everything depends on luck (BTW, he was a staunch supporter of Destiny), we always had an argument related to this topic. My take was different from him because I believe that hard work matters and it eventually pays off no matter what. However, over time I realized that we have to respect others viewpoint/opinions as well and in order to be successful both are essential, apart from this, there are many factors which directly or indirectly plays a vital role, let us analyze them one by one:

1.     Upbringing: We all have different backgrounds, families, education, and caste. We all are raised in a different environment and culture. Hence, the difference in opinion is bound to happen for e.g. A child who is born in a middle-class family wherein the majority of cases has some financial issue(s) will have a different thought process and spending habits vis-à-vis a child who is from an affluent family.

2.     Environment: A few months ago, I read this wonderful quote “Earning money is an art. However, managing money and making money from money is a fine art”. Children who were born and brought up in rich families have access to almost all the resources and facilities, all their demands are fulfilled at the drop of a hat. However, children who are from middle or lower-middle-class families sacrifice(s) a lot and at times are tight-fisted in spending their pocket money.

3.     Money-Management: People from the wealthy background are well connected and they take guidance/consultations from a lot of professionals who are experts in managing money and investments. They end up buying many profitable ventures, however, people from not very wealthy background really have to go an extra mile (in almost every case) in order to achieve anything worthwhile in life.

4.     Mindset and Habits: The majority of Rich people tend to have many habits that may or may not be in congruence with what they want to achieve in Life or as per their respective Goals, they either outsource few things related to their work or delegate them. However, people from middle or lower-middle-class families are quite judicious in their approach and invest a lot in themselves, on their education because they know if they want to achieve anything substantial in life, they have to work hard for that, they are hard-wired to toil hard from their early childhood.

From the above factors we can infer (But, to a certain extent only) that we should not judge a person by their respective opinion(s) as it will differ. In fact, only those people who are insecure, incompetent, and don’t want to step out of their respective comfort zone pinpoint others, judge others and look down upon others. These are the people who strongly believe in Luck and give not much importance to hard work.

Now the moot question is what is Luck. Let me share an interesting quote by Mr. T. Harv Eker.

“If you are willing to do only what’s easy, life will be hard. But if you’re willing to do what’s hard, life will be easy.”

All those things that are not in our control MAY come under the category of Luck. BTW, KARMA plays a very pivotal role in our Life as well (whether we accept it or not). For e.g. if a person wins a lottery (it may be because of his/her sheer Good Luck or Past Karma) but if the same person doesn’t know how to manage that windfall of money wisely then he’ll be broke in no time(Here, again this particular person has to acquire this valuable skill to manage Money, it means he/she has to do his/her respective karma by stepping-out of the comfort zone).

Another e.g. is of the famous movie “Rocky” which is still considered to be one of the best sports movies ever made. Mr. Stallone had only a few dollars in his bank account at that point in time, no job, no hope almost broke at that time. He purchased the ticket to a boxing match between Muhammad Ali and Chuck Wepner, in this match, Wepner was defeated by Ali in the last round of the bout. This match laid the foundation of Rocky and Stallone completed the entire script in 3 and half days, after a lot of struggle this movie was made and smashed the box office records, set a new benchmark for sport genre movies, and won 3 Oscars including Best Picture. Now let’s connect all the dots once again if Stallone didn’t purchase the ticket of that match (Luck) perhaps Rocky was never made into a cult classic (All the hard work done by him and the crew members).

This again shows and proves that hard-word and luck go hand-in-hand. However, we really have to work hard for our success.

“Life begins at the end of your comfort zone.” quote by Neale Donald Walsch

Conclusion:

Hence, we can say that both are important ingredients to be truly successful in life, we need to have many sleepless nights in order to become an overnight sensation. Even in Srimad Bhagavad Gita Lord Krishna said that we have to do our respective Karma but whether we get favorable results or not that is not in our control. Let me end this debatable topic with another interesting quote: “Success is a blend of Good Fortune and Hard Work”.
